It's been one of THOSE weeks.

“Hmmmmmm” Bob

It's been one of those weeks. You know the ones where there's heaps to do but it seems nothing gets done.

I had lots of ideas for today's MondayMotivator but nothing seemed to spring forth as the thing to write about today. So I put it off and now its Monday morning and the MondayMotivator has to go out soon.

We all have days and sometimes weeks like this. Spiraling almost out of control and running on auto-pilot. In these times I wonder - who the heck is at the controls of Glenn. Opportunities come and go because we resist them. it's easy to put something off for a few days and say to ourselves, "We didnt need that need great opportunity."

Well, WAKE UP Glenn. Make something happen today, get back in control of yourself, and don't miss those opportunities even if they are disguised as hard work.

Scott Dixon wins Indy 500

Congratulations to Scott Dixon on his Indy 500 win.

This is an amazing feat. Not only because he is a New Zealander (and I'm bias) but for anyone.

In my opinion he has cemented his place as one of New Zealand's greatest sporting hero's.

AWESOME!

Someone asked Dixon afterward what it meant to win the first "real" Indy 500 in years.

"It's nice," he said, refreshingly candid. "That's about all I can say about it."

Great stuff.

What happens to crazy thoughts?

“The true test of civilization is not the census,
nor the size of cities, nor the crops – no,
but the kind of man the country turns out.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Have you ever wondered what happens to all those crazy thoughts going on in your head? We all have them. Thoughts about what you should have done in a situation, after it has happened. Thoughts about jumping out of your car and really telling the idiot who cut you off how you feel. I have.

I constantly monitor my thoughts to make sure they are positive and in keeping with the person I want to be. This is because I feel sure my thoughts control my feelings which control my performance and I want to do my best at all times.

However I have realised that no matter what crazy thoughts you are having, the measure of you is not your thoughts, but the actions you take. That is the thoughts you act upon.

Actions, not thoughts, will determine what people think about you. Because they can't hear or see your thoughts, they can only see and hear what you do or say.

This week really take note of what you doing or saying. Keep doing the things that work and stop the things that don't. It's hard work, but the rewards will be amazing.

The problem with communication ...
is the illusion that it has been accomplished.
George Bernard Shaw

What you say and how you say it is a big part of life and business. Sometimes you think you have communicated what you wanted to say, only to have your instructions not followed, or you upset someone.

A big part of communication is style. There are different types of style. For example; humorous, relaxed, formal, literal, symbolic and emotional.

The style you use has an effect because if the style you are using is not appropriate for your audience you will not get your message across.

Here are three quick tips for style:

1 Be civil and respectful, even if your message is firm or harsh.

2 Present ideas in a clear, concise fashion. Support them with facts, exhibit the logical flow in your thought process, and if warranted, draw a conclusion.

3 Decide whether you're communicating on behalf of a person, an organization or both, and use the appropriate language ("l" versus "we").

Have a terrific week and think about the style you are using in your next conversation. It makes more difference than you think.

Books I've been reading ...

The 4 Hour Work Week.

This book was great. I was leant it to read and have decided to buy my own copy so I can refer back to it.
Tim Ferriss writes common sense on how to work less and achieve a whole lot more than you thought you could.
Highly recommended reading.

Entertain me or What I learnt from the Foo Fighters

Last night I went to the Foo Fighters concert in Auckland.

GREAT CONCERT!!

Dave Grohl said he wasn't at his screaming best, but he was, and the crowd loved it.

So what did I learn from the Foo Fighters? Everyone wants to be entertained.

We love the entertainer.

Good stories, comedy, banter, we all love a laugh and it makes it easier to think to yourself, "This person is like me."

I wrote this because I want you to think about it next time you meet someone or go home to your kids - DON'T be boring. Use humour, be enthusiastic and it will make a big difference to your life.

It's not the goal that matters

How often I found where I should be going
only by setting out for somewhere else. Buckminster Fuller

Everyone tells you to set goals and make lists. But how many of us actually take the time to do that? About 3%.

3%. Thats not a lot of us is it. And yet if you have a look at who is successful it is the 3% who set goals - I am discounting inheritance and Lotto here.

Setting goals can be a daunting task as you have to put something on paper and do things that move you towards them. Some of those things are hard, some of them might lose you friends, or you might upset some people. As humans we really don't like doing that and if the going gets tough we give up.

Think about this though - the goal itself doesn't matter, it is what we learn and how much we grow on the way to the goal that counts. That sounds exciting.

Every Monday my goal is to have the MondayMotivator written and away before 9am. By having to write about a new subject each week I learn about what I am writing about. That makes it easier for me to do the MondayMotivator because I like learning new things. It's exciting and challenging and makes it easier to hit my goal.

Have a terrific week and set goals that challenge you, stretch you and allow you to learn something new.
