MM - Shut Down Some Programs

Your brain is one of the most powerful computers on the planet. As of May 2008 there is believed to be 6.7 Billion more. I am talking about your brain.

When you are awake you have multiple programs running - breathing (always good), heart beating, seeing and hearing etc. We then might run the program of driving to work and once that is finished run the program of sitting at our desk.

However what we try and do is have lots of programs running at once and so, like a computer with too many windows open, our brain slows down.

We are not good at multi-tasking.

Because when we multi-tasking we are not doing those jobs to the best of our ability. Our brain has slowed down trying to do too many things at once.

To be more efficient, and do a better job, we should do one thing at a time.

This week try it yourself. Concentrate on one job at a time. You will be surprised at how efficient you become and how well you do things.

JK Rowlings Harvard Commencement Speech

This is a fantastic speech and I thoroughly recommend you taking the time (about 20mins) to listen to it. JK speaks about two subjects I feel have had a great impact on my life - Imagination and Failure.

Don't put off your better life.

To be always intending to make a new and better life but never to find time to set about it, is as to put off eating and drinking and sleeping from one day to the next, until you're dead.

I went to a family friend's tribute on Saturday. Others might call what I went to a funeral, however, it was anything but. The above quote sums up this ladies life.

In simple terms the lesson I learned was that you shouldn't put off making a new and better life for yourself. Start today.

If you are in New Zealand then you have a day off today. Make use of it. Do some planning. A one page list of what you want to achieve this year, or in the next five, will get you fired up for the short week ahead.

Short weeks bother me because I really like what I do for a living. In fact weekends sometimes get in the way. But they do give you a breather to think about the week that was and the week ahead.

So take the time, be intentional and plan your life.
