Mobils answer

Firstly, thank you Mobil for getting back to me so quickly. They came back to within hours.

Here is their answer. Let me know what you think;

Dear Glenn

Thank you for your query regarding the system change for the 'EFTPOS at the Pump' terminal.

It is unfortunate, however Banks are working with the 'New Zealand Banking Association' to ensure EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) and Triple DES compliance across New Zealand. As a result all terminals will need to be replaced to meet these new standards.

Mobil does not currently have a plan to replace the EFTPOS at pump units, therefore they will be disconnected from the banks infrastructure. Meaning the following cards will no longer be accepted at pump, they are: Debit Cards, Credit Cards, American Express, Farmers and Diners. These cards will continue to be accepted at the indoor payment facility.

However as Mobil supports it's own infrastructure for some cards Mobilcard, Fleetcard, Drivecard and Onecards can continue to be accepted at the pump terminal. If you wish to continue use of the 'pay at pump' facility perhaps you may wish to apply for one of the above cards, for more information please visit www.mobil.co.nz or www.cardlink.co.nz.

Please note that this change is not being driven by Mobil.

Thank you again for the time you have taken to write to us, we appreciate both positive and negative feedback, and endeavour to improve our service whenever possible.

Thanks for passing that onto me Mike.

Why Mobil annoyed me

Last night I pull in to my local Mobil to fill up.

Get out of the car and go to swipe my card so I can use the 'pay at pump' service.

There is a new sign that says pay at pump is only for Fleetcard, Mobilcard and a few other cards.

I now have to go inside and prepay.

Why did this annoy the heck out of me?

1. The only reason I go to Mobil is for the convenience of the pay at pump service.

2. My expectation of being able to pay at pump, and carry on my way, was sabotaged.

3. It was a cold and wet night and I didnt want to have to be in the weather for any longer than I had too.

4. It seemed to me, a blatant attempt by Mobil to get me inside so I will maybe buy something else.

Now I know that there isnt much profit in petrol and groceries is where they are making money, but, now the convenience is gone why would I go back to Mobil?

I wont be.

Because I expected to be able to do something that I cannot do at any other Service Station and now that difference, which meant a lot to me, is gone, there is no point being loyal to Mobil.

I am sure they will have lost lots of advocates, like me, who really enjoyed that service.

Boo to Mobil.
