Why Mobil annoyed me

Last night I pull in to my local Mobil to fill up.

Get out of the car and go to swipe my card so I can use the 'pay at pump' service.

There is a new sign that says pay at pump is only for Fleetcard, Mobilcard and a few other cards.

I now have to go inside and prepay.

Why did this annoy the heck out of me?

1. The only reason I go to Mobil is for the convenience of the pay at pump service.

2. My expectation of being able to pay at pump, and carry on my way, was sabotaged.

3. It was a cold and wet night and I didnt want to have to be in the weather for any longer than I had too.

4. It seemed to me, a blatant attempt by Mobil to get me inside so I will maybe buy something else.

Now I know that there isnt much profit in petrol and groceries is where they are making money, but, now the convenience is gone why would I go back to Mobil?

I wont be.

Because I expected to be able to do something that I cannot do at any other Service Station and now that difference, which meant a lot to me, is gone, there is no point being loyal to Mobil.

I am sure they will have lost lots of advocates, like me, who really enjoyed that service.

Boo to Mobil.

Why the best team wins.

How do you build a block wall?
Bricks and morter.

Good morning,
The best team won on the weekend.

That's right, the Warriors beat the reigning NRL title holders Melbourne Storm, in very cold and wet conditions on Sunday.

Why did they win? Because they stuck to what was working for them and stopped doing anything that didn't.

When you have a game plan and parts of it are working and parts aren't. Why would you continue to keep doing things that aren't working and expect different results? That is a definition of insanity.

Flexibility, innovation and doing the right things are three qualities that enable you be to successful.
You can test something new, it doesnt work, tweak it, it does, keep doing that. Test something new, that works, tweak it etc, and then stick to things that are working. Once you are moving forward you can test, fail and tweak in the background instead of on the playing field on gameday.

This week, work on being being flexible (yes, yoga might help), study what you do so you can be innovative and have a terrific week.

BURST the bubble

Are you living in a bubble?

Todays MondayMotivator has probably reached you at your work bubble.

Which you got to in your car bubble, after leaving your home bubble. This evening you will most probably drive in your car bubble, to your gym bubble, or supermarket bubble, and then back to your home bubble.

Think about this for a minute. Thats a lot of bubbles. But your still, in a bubble.

Take a look around you and see who is there. If your in an office by yourself have a good look at your office.

Right. This is your work bubble. Do you like it? I'm grateful I do. But I do have to burst it sometimes and so I either go for a walk to the coffee shop up the road - my coffee shop bubble - or organise a meeting with someone.

Because you never know what is going to happen when you burst your bubble. I meet all sorts of interesting people walking up to, from and at the coffee shop. And at meetings I get inspired and come up with new ideas, or rehash old ones to make them better.

Opportunites will come when you burst your bubble. Walk instead of drive. Turn left instead of right. Make time to see your friends and clients.

Burst a bubble today and have terrific week.

Timothy Ferriss on Fast Company TV

I read Tim's book, The Four Hour Work Week, awhile ago and thought it was great.

Here he is being interviewed on Fast Company TV.

How do you rate yourself?

Are you tuned or highly tuned and performing at your best?

How many stars would you give yourself out of five?

Reading an article about shopping mall ratings makes me think about how many stars I would give myself.

If Westfield Albany got five stars and Lynnmall got two stars what was the difference between the two that made Albany the place to shop? It seems that Lynmall needs a 'spit and polish' and some money invested into it to get it back up to scratch. It wasn't performing at its full potential because of
these factors.

Is that you? Do you need a spit and polish, and are you investing any time and money into making sure you perform at your full potential?

In my image today you can see a 'tuned' MINI and a 'highly tuned' MINI. Which one would you like to be?

Today give yourself a rating out of five stars. Be totally honest, then work out what time, money or effort you need to invest to achieve your five star rating.

Have a terrific week. (I gave myself four stars!)

MM - Shut Down Some Programs

Your brain is one of the most powerful computers on the planet. As of May 2008 there is believed to be 6.7 Billion more. I am talking about your brain.

When you are awake you have multiple programs running - breathing (always good), heart beating, seeing and hearing etc. We then might run the program of driving to work and once that is finished run the program of sitting at our desk.

However what we try and do is have lots of programs running at once and so, like a computer with too many windows open, our brain slows down.

We are not good at multi-tasking.

Because when we multi-tasking we are not doing those jobs to the best of our ability. Our brain has slowed down trying to do too many things at once.

To be more efficient, and do a better job, we should do one thing at a time.

This week try it yourself. Concentrate on one job at a time. You will be surprised at how efficient you become and how well you do things.

JK Rowlings Harvard Commencement Speech

This is a fantastic speech and I thoroughly recommend you taking the time (about 20mins) to listen to it. JK speaks about two subjects I feel have had a great impact on my life - Imagination and Failure.

Don't put off your better life.

To be always intending to make a new and better life but never to find time to set about it, is as to put off eating and drinking and sleeping from one day to the next, until you're dead.

I went to a family friend's tribute on Saturday. Others might call what I went to a funeral, however, it was anything but. The above quote sums up this ladies life.

In simple terms the lesson I learned was that you shouldn't put off making a new and better life for yourself. Start today.

If you are in New Zealand then you have a day off today. Make use of it. Do some planning. A one page list of what you want to achieve this year, or in the next five, will get you fired up for the short week ahead.

Short weeks bother me because I really like what I do for a living. In fact weekends sometimes get in the way. But they do give you a breather to think about the week that was and the week ahead.

So take the time, be intentional and plan your life.
